Frank Pauly

Frank Pauly, 13 Oct 1855 – 16 May 1891

Frank was born in  Holsetnberg?, Westphalen Germany.  He married  Catherine Volpenhein in 1879 in Germany.  They had one son, Anthony 1880, born in Germany.  It is said that Frank immigrated to the US via Baltimore in about 1881 leaving Catherine and Anthony in Germany.  Fearing that Frank was enjoying his freedom too much, Catherine and Anthony followed him to Covington Ky, in about 1884.    They lived in Covington Ky between 1881 – 1891 and had three additional children.  Frank was a tailor and, in 1890, was listed as a clothing renovator, 34 E 5th Street, Covington and stock cutter, 121 Main in Cincinnati.  Frank died in 1891 at age 36.

Catherine Volpenhein

Catherine was born in Westphalia, Germany.  Her mother’s name was Elizabeth Brandner.  She married Frank Pauly on 2 Oct 1879.  She immigrated to Covington Ky with her son Anthony in about 1882.  During the voyage the ship on which she was sailing floundered and may have sank.  Emil Lindegger, who she had met on board, helped  rescue her and her child Anthony.   She had eight children by Frank Pauly, three survived.  She married Emil Lindegger after Frank died.  It is said that Catherine refused to learn English or, at least, would not speak it.

Joseph Vincent Pauly

Joseph Vincent Pauly 25 Apr 1886 – 29 Nov 1942

Joseph was born in Covington Ky.  His father, Frank Pauly died when Joe was 9 years old.  When he was 10, his mother Catherine married Emil Lindegger.  At age 20, he married Clara Stubbers in Covington Ky.  They initially lived on 1538 Nancy Street, Covington Ky, then, in the 1928, moved to 5735 Lester Road, Cincinnati, Oh.  They had eight children.  Joseph was a machinist, in ~1915 Stove Maker at J A Fay & Egens Co, Front Street, Cin OH.  He lost this position at the onset of WW1 as part of an anti German bias.  He took an position with his father in law’s company, Incandescent Light and Stove (ILSCO) selling surplus incandescent lighting systems in the Kentucky and Tennessee back country and after war he continued working for ILSCO.  (The lighting systems were gasoline powered, much like today’s Colmann lanterns, that were made obsolete by the introduction of gas lighting in most cities.)  He became president of the Company on Joseph Stubbers’ death in 1940.  It is believed that Joseph Pauly invented the solderless lug.  This may be true as ILSCO claims “In 1935, ILSCO introduced the SLU line, one of the first solderless terminals that is now recognized as the forerunner of many modern connectors”.  ILSCO does not have a use patent on this devise, but does have a manufacturing patent on making such a connector from copper sheet, which would be less expensive than copper tubing. They are widely used today.  Joseph died in 1942 at age at age 56.  (He is said to have had rheumatic fever as a child which resulted in a weakened heart.)
