Weinkam

Bernard C Weinkam (1886-1956) married Marie L. Brernens (1887-1958)

Bernard's parents were Jacob Weinkam (1853- ) and Julia A Doppes (1858-1940)

Jacob's parents were Peter Weinkam (1820-1869) and Anna M Bergmann (1824-1861)

Julia's parents were John B. Doppes (1823-1906) and Clara Kordes (1825- )

WEINKAM

There are numerous errors in the census records, especially names. The Weinkam name appears in several variations - 1850 census as Wincamp, 1860 as Weinckamp, 1870 as Meinkenn, 1880 as Weinkamp, Weinkan, Winkan, 1890 as Weinkan, thereafter as Weinkam.

Peter Weinkam

Peter Weinkam 1821 – 1856

Peter was born in Bavaria and immigrated to Cincinnati, Ohio sometime in the 1840’s. He was the first of that name to be recorded in Ohio and possibly the first in the US. In 1850, he was living alone and employed as a brewer. He married Margaret ( ) and by 1860, they had three children. He became a saloon keeper with real estate valued at $1000. Presumably after Margaret died, in about 1861, Peter married Mary Worthman in 1862 and they had a son Samuel 1963-1915. Peter died on 23 May 1869 and is buried in St John's cemetery, St Bernard Ohio along with Anna Werthmann Weinkam 1828-1887 and Anna Weinkam 1865-1923.

Margaret ( ) Weinkam

Margaret 1824 –

Margaret was born in Bavaria and immigrated to the US by 1845. She married Peter Weinkam, either in Bavaria or after moving to Ohio. She had three children by 1860, all born in Ohio. There is a complication in the record with Peter living alone in Cincinnati in 1850 and their having a son Michael born in 1845.

Mary Worthman Weinkam

Mary Weinkam 1830 – 1887

Mary was the second wife of Peter Weinkam. They married in about 1862 and had one son, Samuel 1863. Mary is listed in the 1880 census as a widow (transcribed Winkan) who is living in Cincinnati with her (step?)daughter Margaret 1951, also a widow; Anna her (step)daughter 1860 and Samuel 1862, her son. Peter Weinkam id buried with Anna Werthmann Weinkam who died 16 Apr 1887 at age 59 (1828-1887). It is probable that Mary Worthman and Anna Werthmann are the same people.

Margaret Weinkam Klenhenz

Margaret Weinkam 1851 –

Margaret is not listed as the daughter of Peter and Margaret Weinkam in the 1860 census. A Margaret Weinkam married John Kleinhenz on 31 Dec 1867 in Hamilton Co Oh at age 16. They had a son John, born 1869 in Cincinnati and, in 1870, were living with Jacob Weinkam. By 1880, Margaret was a widow living with her mother Mary Weinkam. It is possible that she was Mary Worthman’s daughter who took the Weinkam name after her mother married Peter. She would then be Jacob’s stepsister

Anna Weinkam

Anna Weinkam 1859 – 1923

Anna, Jacob’s sister, was born in Cincinnati, her parents, Peter and Margaret, were born in Bavaria. In 1890, Anna was a saleswoman, hair products, at 78 Clark, Cincinnati. Anna died 16 Jan 1923 and is buried in St John's cemetery, St Bernard Ohio with Peter and Anna Weinkam.

Samuel Weinkam

Samuel Weinkam 1863-1915 Samuel, Jacob’s half brother, was born in Cincinnati and lived in Kenton Co Ky. In 1890, Samuel had a shop at 145 Carlisle Ave, and, in 1900 was listed as a confectioner Samuel Weinkam married Isabella, born Dec 1862 in Missouri, in around 1893. They had no children. Samuel A. Weinkam, Ky, died 6 Aug 1915 at age 52. The Kentucky death certificate indicated that Samuel was born in Ohio,
Father: Peter Weinkam, born in Germany; Mother: Anna Worthman, born in Germany

Weinkam, in Germany

The earliest immigrates to the US were Peter Weinkam, Cincinnati in about 1848 and Andrew Weinkam, Baltimore in about 1850, both came from Bavaria.

Jennifer W. has posted the history of Weinkam’s from about 1866, http://rootsofmine.blogspot.com.

Jennifer, who in the granddaughter of Edith Marie Kunigunda Weinkam, believes that there were members of the family the immigrated to the USA. No records have been found to connect the Weinkam’s in the US to those in theBamberg area. It would be necessary to examine the parish records in these towns in order to obtain more information. It may be noted, however, that Andrew Weinkam named his daughter Kunigunda. He did not pick that out of a hat.

These references are all from neighboring small towns in Bavaria: Mittelsteinach, Uehlfeld and Buttenheim are within 30 km of each other (20km south of Bamberg, 50km north of Nurnberg). These include the Weinkam’s that owned the Weinkam Bakery that was founded in Buttenheim in 1775 and still operated by the Weinkam family.

Transcribed by: Kimberly Graman, Dayton, OH

J. H. Doppes, president of the J. B. Doppes Sons Lumber Company, located at No. 1244 to 1266 Gest Street, was born in Cincinnati on January 24, 1857. He is a son of the late J.B. Doppes, a native of Germany whence he immigrated to the United States in his early manhood, locating in Cincinnati. He began his business career in the Queen City as an employee in a lumber yard. In addition to the energy and perseverance that usually characterize the Teuton he possessed those rare inherent qualities that stamp the successful man. Keen foresight and fine business acumen, accompanied by unremitting energy, enabled him to climb the ladder of success, until from a minor employee he attained a position in the business world that entitled him to the respect he was accorded by all with whom he came in contact. He arrived in Cincinnati in 1849 and twenty-two years thereafter he became identified with the business that he had solidly established at the time of his demise in 1893.

The public and Catholic parochial schools of Cincinnati provided J. H. Doppes with his education, which was completed in the night High School where he graduated in 1875. In 1869 he began his business training under his father, to whom he attributes much credit for his success. He worked about the lumberyard and office while still a school boy, becoming his father's bookkeeper at an early age. Among his valued possessions now are the original books of the company, particularly the first order book. After the death of their father the sons, of whom our subject is the eldest, succeeded to the business, which they incorporated in 1904 with J. H. Doppes as president. Although they conduct a wholesale business their trade is almost exclusively retail.

In 1881 Mr. Doppes was married to Miss. Katherine Keating and to them there have been born three children, two daughters and a son. The family are all communicants of the Roman Catholic Church, belonging to St. Lawrence's parish on Price Hill. They take an active interest in all organizations connected with the parish, Mr. Doppes being an earnest and enthusiastic worker in the Men's Club. He is also affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, Price Hill Council. His political support he usually gives to the Democratic Party, but he is not personally concerned in political affairs further than to meet the requirements of good citizenship by the casting of a ballot on Election Day. His success Mr. Doppes attributed very largely to the fact that he thoroughly mastered every detail of the business and is still studying and learning. Under the capable supervision of his father he early acquired the habit of thoroughness, and has lived to appreciate the fact the American business failures can more often be attributed to a superficial understanding of fundamental principles and conditions than any other one thing.
